HOW TO CLOSE A SWIMMING POOL

Please note that L A Pool & Spa assumes NO responsibility for the opening of your pool.

The instructions shown are simply what we have found to work.

I/G Pool Closing Instructions

NOTE: Have water tested to make sure your pool is READY for closing

To close your pool:

  • Backwash filter for 5 minutes
  • Drain your water level just below the skimmer – ensuring you abide by all environmental bylaws and regulations in effect – by vacuuming on ‘drain’/’waste’ (you can also get rid of any debris/algae this way)
  • Blow out skimmer line with shop-vac (Note: if your shop-vac has no blower you can vacuum out the skimmer line, and the return lines … but it means draining the water just below the jets)
  • Add winterizing anti-freeze at the pump end of the skimmer line, and blow with shop-vacuum until anti-freeze just starts coming out of the skimmer (Note: you can add anti-freeze by vacuuming as above … just be sure to stop when the anti-freeze gets to the shop-vac )
  • Plug skimmer with a ‘Super Gizzmo’; add a small amount of anti-freeze to the skimmer, and blow line again, to be sure there are no bubbles … if there are, this means the Gizzmo isn’t sealing properly, and water will leak in over the winter … fix the problem and repeat until there are NO bubbles
  • Remove skimmer weir
  • Remove eyeballs from returns
  • Blow out return line(s) with a shop-vac (or vacuum as above)
  • Plug returns with expansion plugs
  • Add winterizing anti-freeze at the filter end of the return line(s)
  • Burp return line(s) – attach blower end of shop-vacuum to return lines at the filter, start blower, loosen off expansion plug (in pool) until anti-freeze just starts coming out at the return (colour/odour/temperature change will indicate anti-freeze)
  • Disconnect pump, drain & take inside (if possible), otherwise remove all drain plugs from pump (typically at LEAST two plugs on pump body)
  • Chlorinator/Brominator:  remove unused pucks from unit, and store for winter; remove drain plug from bottom of unit
  • Salt system:  disconnect turbo cell (from return line), and bring inside; turn control unit to ‘off’
  • Remove drain cap & sight glass from filter
  • Put filter in WINTER position
  • Add FULL Closing Kit & baking soda (if required based on your previous water test); stir with a pole to distribute chemicals, being careful to avoid damaging liner
  • Cover pool
    1. Overlap cover: use water bags, filled to 2/3 full (double water bags recommended)
    2. Vinyl hanging cover:  use liner lock to secure cover
    3. Safety cover: lift anchors and secure cover straps, tightening any straps that need it

Note:  when storing plugs/drain caps/etc. – we recommend using your skimmer/pump basket for easy storage (this way everything is in ONE spot come spring)

Sit back and relax until spring…
